A disturbing devotion to all things lawn mower.

Homemade Robotic Lawn Mower by ColorClockwork

We are currently getting the details of how it was made (and a few good pictures) but in the mean time enjoy a simple breakdown and a few videos of the finished version.

Drive System

Salvaged from an old Barbie Jeep (hence the pink wheels) driven from a car battery.

Control System

The Control System is driven off bumper bars attached to sensors. As the bumpers hit obstacles they complete a circuit causing the motors to reverse and mower stops driving forward and backs away from the obstacle. So the mower doesn't get stuck going back and forward along the same path, one of the wheels has a slight turn introduced to it so the path is more variable.

Cutting System

The cutting system is three high speed steel plates with two razors attached to each. Just like a normal mower they rotate, causing an updraft pulling up the grass and the razors cut it as they drive past. The three disks will give a greater cutting surface meaning the corners and edges can be reached.

Tricks

Too sturdier frame mean it was getting stuck regularly. By introducing independent suspension reduced the amount of times it got stuck.
