Lawn Mower Repair
If you haven't been taking care of your lawn mower or you been given one or bought a second hand one it might be in need of a little repair. For the novice this can be a little daunting so lets go through this check list style. Start at the top, follow the instructions and each and hopefully we can find the problem.
- Check the Fuel - Fuel is only good for about 3 to 4 months and the most common problem is bad fuel. Have a look here to find out if it is OK and learn how to replace it
- Check the Battery - Make sure there is some power in your battery here.
- Check the Spark - Fuel is only useful for the engine if it can be ignited. The second most common problem is the spark plug. Have a look here to find out how to diagnose and fix spark problems
- Check the Air Intake - Fuel is not going to burn without some air. Here we will show you how to make sure air is getting into the engine.
- Check the Fuel Intake - Is the fuel getting to the engine? You've got fuel and got a spark but are they meeting. Here you can find out if they are indeed meeting each other and how to fix it if they are not.
- If it is none of these then there is a good chance it is your carburetor (controls the air/fuel mix) or the engine block itself which a novice has no chance of fixing. Take it to the shop.
You might have some obvious symptoms that can short cut you to the exact problem:
- White Smoke - White smoke normally mean some water has gotten into then fuel. To fix replace the fuel.
- Engine keeps surging - Have a look at your carburetor
- Runs for a minute or two and then stops - Make sure the hole in your fuel tank lid is clear here and make sure your fuel line is clear.
- Engine only runs with the choke on - Have a look at your carburetor
CAUTION: Through these you will be dealing with petrol that is flammable and explosive. All care should be taken and you follow these suggestions at your own risk. If you are unsure at any stage then seek professional help to fix the problem.
